A signed jersey is part keepsake, part investment. Framed well, it becomes the centrepiece of a room; framed badly, the signatures fade, the fabric sags and the colours wash out within a few years. Here’s how we approach every jersey that comes through our Mississauga studio.
Most jerseys are displayed front-facing with the sleeves folded behind for a clean, symmetrical shape. If the signature or the number is on the back, we’ll flip it — or design a layout that shows both the name bar and the autograph. The goal is to show what matters most without forcing the fabric into unnatural folds.
We never glue a jersey down. It’s shaped over an acid-free backing and secured with discreet stitching, so it can be removed later without damage. That matters for value as much as for looks — an altered or glued jersey is worth less to a collector.
“The best jersey frames look effortless — but every fold, stitch and spacer is deliberate.”
Ink and dye fade under daylight and fluorescent light. UV-filtering glass or acrylic blocks most of the harmful light, and we often recommend acrylic for large jerseys because it’s lighter and shatter-resistant. Even so, avoid hanging it opposite a sunny window.
A jersey needs space between the fabric and the glass so it doesn’t press flat or trap moisture. A deep shadow-box moulding with spacers creates that gap — and adds a sense of depth that makes the piece look premium on the wall.
Photos from the game, a ticket stub or an engraved name plate turn a jersey into a story. Multi-opening mats let us arrange these around the jersey so the whole piece reads as one display.
